Surgical Technology
Program Overview
The surgical technology program was established in 1963 and is accredited by
the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and the
New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. The surgical
technology graduate is eligible to sit for the national LCC-ST Certification
Exam. Graduates can transfer the credits from this program to Berkshire
Community College's Associate Degree in Health Science program.
Surgical technologists are integral members of the surgical team who work
closely with the surgeon, nurse and anesthesiologist delivering direct care
before, during and after surgery. Surgical technologists need manual
dexterity, must be conscientious, orderly and emotionally stable to handle
the demands of the operating room. Skills needed to succeed include physical
strength, critical thinking, concentration and eye/hand coordination. Demand
for surgical technologists is expected to increase much faster than that of
other professions, because the US population is aging and older people
generally require surgery more often. Graduates are employed in outpatient
surgical centers, central sterile reprocessing units, and operating room
settings and in the medical sales field. Please explore our web site and

Testimonials
"I was looking for a field of opportunity in which I could learn, grow and
possibly be able to branch out into other areas. I believe I found it in
this program. McCann has an excellent reputation for teaching made my
decision easy to enroll. Learning about the human anatomy, new medical
terminology, the instrumentation, sterile technique to be performed on
every surgery and the Surgical Technologists roll has in the team concept
of a successful outcome. I would highly recommend this course"

"My name is Pam Sommer and I have been a surgical technologist for 25
years. Looking back, I cannot say what sent me in this direction, but to
this day I have never regretted my decision. Being a surgical tech has
been a very rewarding and interesting career. I feel I offer very unique
service to the hospital and the community. I am the patient's advocate
making sure everything is in order and properly prepared and used during
the surgery.
McCann gave me my start as a surgical tech and 25 years of experience at
North Adams Regional Hospital has made me the best I can be."
